“Hundreds of birds in NYC infected by bird flu after poultry markets allowed to reopen”
By Katherine Donlevy and Nicole Rosenthal
“Activists warned that there was no way to regulate the live markets in the face of the crisis, with some claiming they were hawking “visibly sickly-looking” chickens to unsuspecting customers.
“This latest outbreak just validates what we’ve been saying — that there is simply no way to operate wet markets in NYC during a bird flu crisis without endangering public health,” Edita Birnkrant, executive director for animal activist group NYCLASS, told The Post.”

“Massachusetts infectious disease specialists say that not enough is being done to combat the bird flu and worry it could become a human pandemic, the Boston Globe reports.”
By Thea DiGiammerino and Munashe Kwangwari
“Several of the state’s leading experts made the comments at a public forum Wednesday, saying gaps in surveillance of H5N1 – known as avian flu – and funding cuts by the Trump administration are hurting efforts to contain the disease, which is highly contagious in birds and has been increasing in frequency in other animals, like dairy cows.”

“We research infectious diseases. Arizona should take bird flu much more seriously”
Bryan Yavari and Frank LoVecchioopinion contributors
“This mutation is a serious cause for concern because it may continue to mutate and infect humans.
Arizona must increase testing, reporting
Because of how rapidly infections are changing, Arizona public health officials must offer a daily or weekly dashboard of new cases in both humans and animals, with information about the location of these positive cases.
This updated information could extend potentially lifesaving data to millions of people.
The state also must significantly increase testing in high-risk areas, such as poultry farms, wastewater treatment facilities and wildlife reserves.”

“Bird flu spread is ‘slowing down,’ California officials say
By Rachel Bluth
There have been no new cases in humans since January, Pan said. And State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones said the state’s almost 1,000 dairy herds of cows are getting sick at a slower pace. The virus has started to decline in poultry as well, with dozens of flocks coming off quarantine and being approved to restock their birds.
“The good news is we are lifting quarantines now faster than we’re placing them,” Jones said. “There were times in December where I wanted to break down in tears, because every night we got 30 new cases.”
